Kalanayam

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication of St. Joseph's College for Women (Autonomous), Visakhapatnam conducted a two day film festival, Kalanayam which means Dawn of the New in the college campus on 22nd of September 2022 and 23rd of September 2022. 

The film festival was inaugurated by Prof DVR Murthy who heads the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and is also the Dean of Examinations at Andhra University. The second day was graced by Mr. Kandregula Narayana (Film Producer and Director)

The students of Journalism and Mass Communication department went into planning the entire event and took care of the tiniest details from film genres to shooting short films. They also produced a documentary on Indian cinema. 

Students and faculty from Alwardas Public School, inter and degree students of St. Joseph's School attended the fest while a few other schools and colleges were not able to attend the event due to exam schedules. 

The fest showcased 13 models indigenously made by the students of journalism and Mass Communication along with 6 short films which were scripted, produced and directed by the same set of students. The guest and the faculty appreciated Kalanayam for providing a platform to exhibit the students talents and introducing the world of cinema to the audience.    

Field Visit to the Naval Air base and a Naval Ship

 The second year and third year students from the department of Journalism and Mass Communication were given an opportunity to visit two restricted Naval areas- INS DEGA (Naval air base) and INS KAMORTA (Naval ship) on 20th August 2022. 

Post COVID-19, this is the first time that the Eastern Naval Command permitted any visitors due to security issues. The students got an opportunity to meet women officers at INAS DEGA who showed and explained about the working of various Naval aircrafts such as Hawks, Dorniers, Chetak helicopters, Kamovs, the newly inducted P-8Is, microlight aircrafts and so on. 

It was a moment of intense pride when they met the men and women flying and operating these aircrafts and they also got a chance to interact with them at length especially about how to join the Armed Forces and what are the different options through which they could join the same. 

At INS KAMORTA, the students got a chance to understand the functioning of a ship when at sea and interacted with the Commanding Officer and Executive officer who explained the functioning of the ship and what were its main tasks when at sea.

Photography Exhibition 2022

The department of Journalism and Mass Communication at St. Joseph's College for Women (Autonomous) held a Photography exhibition on 18th August 2022. This event was entirely hosted and conducted by the Second year students of Journalism and Mass Communication department. The students here were given a theme 'Life in Focus' wherein they took pictures pertaining to this theme. Each student took about 2-4 pictures and in total there were about 107 pictures on display. They were also asked to make note of the time and place when they took the picture along with a small description of how the picture was related to the theme according to them. 

The exhibition was inaugurated by Mrs. Vickie Hale from the English department, Dr. PK Jayalakshmi from the Second languages department and Dr. Lakshmi Prabha from the Home Science department of the college. Ten best pictures were selected by them and the winners were felicitated by the Head of the Journalism and Mass Communication department, Dr. Tina Mani.  

The faculty and the students from the college visited the G2 room where the exhibition took place. They appreciated the efforts put in by the students of the department of journalism and Mass Communication for conducting an event like this which was a first of its kind.
